Upcoming Workshops
I’m going to attend Sage Days 10 in Nancy, France (October 10-15, 2008). At SD10 I’ll give a contributed talk about matrix multiplication over $\mathbb{F}_2$, i.e. the M4RI library. I’m also going to attend the Second Workshop on Mathematical Cryptology in Santander, Spain (October 23-25, 2008).
Fri, 18. Jul 2008ISSAC
I’m going to this year’s International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation (ISSAC) starting on Sunday. William is giving a plenary lecture on Sage titled “Can There be a Viable Free Open Source Alternative to Magma, Maple, Mathematica, and Matlab?” a.k.a. “Computer algebra community meet Sage; Sage meet the computer algebra community”.
Fri, 20. Jun 2008QOTD
“Mathematics is the art of reducing problems to linear algebra.” Bill Hart was introduced to this definition when he started his undergrad.
Sun, 16. Sep 2007Upcoming Workshops/ Travel Plans
I am going to visit:
- ECrypt’s Tools for Cryptanalysis Workshop, Institute of Mathematics (IMPAN), Krakow (Poland), September 24 - 25, 2007.
- SAGE Days 5, Clay Math Institute, Cambridge (USA), September 30 - October 3, 2007.
- SAGE Days 6, Heilbronn Institute, Bristol (UK), November 10 - 14, 2007.
SD5 will be on computational arithmetic geometry and SD6 will focus cryptography and arithmetic geometry. As usually, the prime resource for SAGE related workshops is the SAGE wiki.
Thu, 21. Jun 2007Announcement
Starting this summer/fall I am going to be a grad student at Royal Holloway, University of London. More specifically I am going to study with/under (whats the correct word here?) Carlos Cid from the Information Security Group. My PhD will involve algebraic techniques in cryptanalysis and computer algebra, i.e. it is going to be great fun.
So, if you are from the London area and think there are things I should know before moving there (SW, btw.), get in touch.

“Particularly in more advanced applications of Mathematica, it may sometimes seem worthwhile to try to analyze internal algorithms in order to predict which way of doing a given computation will be the most efficient. And there are indeed occasionally major improvements that you will be able to make in specific computations as a result of such analyses.
But most often the analyses will not be worthwhile. For the internals of Mathematica are quite complicated, and even given a basic description of the algorithm used for a particular purpose, it is usually extremely difficult to reach a reliable conclusion about how the detailed implementation of this algorithm will actually behave in particular circumstances.” (Wolfram Research Inc.) … *gasp* …
“Wow. I can’t believe they actually said that. What incredible arrogance. I think this in itself demonstrates pretty clearly why open source alternatives are necessary.” (David)

Been there, done that.
Quick note: I graduated the day before yesterday. Slides of my colloquium talk may be found here. They are a prerry superficial rundown of the stuff I did for my thesis.
Elsewhere: Suspend-to-RAM now kind of works but is usesless because I need to unload the ATI driver before suspending.

Let’s say, someone I know is going on vacation to the westcoast and blogs random crap about it at: http://s3m.blogspot.com
Tue, 30. May 2006Star Wars: A Missing Hope
A “missing” scene from A New Hope not yet added to any special edition may be viewed at YouTube (Btw: The YouTube embed code is not valid (X)HTML).
Done: Totally geeking out about Star Wars.

Just saw the keynote at the 22C3 by Joi Ito who is one of those guys that are board members everywhere. Bad thing: CCC is talking politics which it does not understand (read: conspiracy theories and monopoly angst) but that Joi Ito guy did show some nice slides like “Do Not Overestimate Conspiracies” and something like “Profiling is not about Your Porn Habits”. Good thing: They play Atmosphere.
