Study course: Computer Science (Diploma)

Informatik [computer science] is the scientific field that deals with the analysis, development and application of information technical systems which are commonly called computers.

At present, the Universität Bremen offers courses of study that lead to Diploma (9 semester) and Bachelor of Science (6 Semester) and building upon the Bachelor's degree Master of Science (4 semesters). Starting from Winter term 2009/2010 no new students are admitted for the Diploma program.

The course with the final degree diploma prepares students for a career in any area of development and application of information technical systems. It also provides them with a basis for a career in scientific research.

The course with the final degree Bachelor of Science (BA) conveys primarily knowledge, methods and skills that aim at qualifying the student for a professional career. In combination with a following Master of Science degree (MA), this course can be compared to the diploma course.

The following description refers to both the diploma and the Bachelor of Science course. Differences will be pointed out explicitly.

General Information

Informatik [computer science] does not only deal with the efficient calculation of functions. It also looks at questions like what is calculated and why, what benefits and disadvantages result from it, how we use computers and how this changes us and our lives. It is about patterns and formalisation that provide a motive for these calculations. And Informatik is about usage, about interacting with computers.

Computer scientists develop and analyse operating systems, user interfaces, text-, image- and multimedia applications, process and system control, figure recognition systems, information systems, databases and many other things.

The course includes the theoretical, applicatory and technical basics of computer science, their application in order to solve concrete problems and the social relations of development and application processes. These are also the topics of the research projects of the course, which cover a vast field from technical-mathematical basics and conceptualising and realising information technical systems up to questions regarding basic conditions and social consequences.

Besides this distinct orientation towards application it is important to point out that the Informatik courses in Bremen include collegiate projects, in which students work and investigate in groups on topics of practical relevance for a period of several semesters.

People who find it hard to cope with mathmatics and have serious problems with the English language, or who are not interested in the historical, social, psycological, economical and political premises and effects of big software systems should think through if they really want to study Informatik. People who want to take the challenge of seeking formalisation in unknown territory, however, who want to get to know its borders and create software within them should try Informatik.
