The course of study "Digitale Medien" [digital media] prepares students for a career which is marked by the analysis, development and application of digital media in countless economic and social fields. It deals with the theoretical and practical basics and the development of interactive multimedia systems with computer science and interaction design methods, the application of these systems in order to solve concrete problems and the social relations of these develpoment and application processes.
The course of study "Digitale Medien" (BA) is offered by a cooperation of the 4 state-approved universities of Bremen (the Hochschule für Künste [academy of arts], the Hochschulen Bremen and Bremerhaven and the Universität). Students can do up to half of the required credits at the other academies. The academy of arts offers the branch of study "Mediengestaltung" [media design] in the context of the study course digital media. The other academies offer "Medieninformatik" as a branch of study - a computer science course that deals with the application of mulitmedia design.
It is usually not possible to switch to the branch of study media design. However, lectures and projects, including the two-semester BA project, are often completed in mixed groups of media computer scientists and media designers. "Digitale Medien" is designed as an international course of study and spending a semester abroad is compulsory. In the course of the studies a good command of English is to be provided evidence for by means of a standardised test (usually TOEFL).
The term »computer science« is to be understood in the scientific sense in this course of study. The aim is to be able to develop systems such as web shops, games, graphic software, but also conditions for the development of multimedia applications. The course therefore deals not at last with programming and mathematics. Application workshops will take place in the context of project work at the most.
