Abstraction in context: One approach to look at learning mathematics
A pair of grade 8 students get stuck solving a problem in probability, which the teacher
expected them to solve rather easily. This quite typical classroom event raises a large variety
of questions and issues, thus illustrating the complexity of (research in) mathematics
education. The nested epistemic actions model of abstraction in context offers one possible
approach to answer some of these questions, leaving many others unanswered. This model
and its treatment of the above event by means of the idea of partially correct knowledge
constructs will be briefly presented. Finally, the question will be raised, whether and how the
discipline of mathematics education can achieve more comprehensive treatments of similar
events.
The talk will be presented in German, and accompanied by slides in English.

Mehrzweckhochhauses (MZH) der Universität Bremen, Bibliothekstraße.
Zuvor gibt es Kaffee/Tee und Gebäck im Raum 7140.
