Symmetric groups and spheres
This talk will give a modern explanation of the classical theorem of Barratt and Priddy which asserts that the
space

QS whose homotopy groups are the stable homotopy groups of spheres has the same homology as
the infinite symmetric group. The methods involved are essentially combinatorial, in that one uses an
analysis of the homotopy invariants of an interesting family of small categories.
