Semiotics vs. Mechanics, or Fiction/Simulation/Reality?Two game-ontological models

Date: 05.12.2007

Place: MZH 5210

Lecturer: Espen J. Aarseth, Ph.D. (Center of Computer Games Research, IT University of Copenhagen)

How do we understand meaning and referentiality in games?
Are game worlds and game objects ficticious, e.g. like literary worlds and objects?
Is semiotics sufficient to understand the production of game meaning?
In this talk, two models will be presented for understanding the dual layers of game meaning and the tripartite nature of game objects.
