On extensions by amenable groups
By a result of Kesten, the spectral radius of the Markov operator associated with a symmetric random walk
on a discrete group G is equal to one if and only if the group is amenable. In the talk, an extension of this
result to group extensions of topological Markov chains is presented: under a symmetry condition one can
show that the pressure of the extension is equal to the pressure of the topological Markov chain if the group
is amenable. This result then can be used to obtain a partial extension of a result of Brooks on the spectral
radius of the Laplacian on normal covers of convex cocompact hyperbolic manifolds.
