"Chance art" programs draw random samples from a mathematically specified set
of images. Their output demonstrates the artist's decision about this space of
possible outcomes. One may, however, wish to avoid this decision; the ideal
chance art algorithm should draw samples from the set of all possible images. To
specify this set is trivial if we construe the notion of an "image" in a reductive way
(e.g., as "pixel configuration"). It is quite challenging, however, if we insist on a
more psychological notion of images, as correlates of perceptual experiences. In
this case, random image generation should implement a formal theory of visual
Gestalt perception. Non-trivial theories of this sort do not exist yet, however. The
development of chance art algorithms with increasingly large, well-structured
sample spaces, is therefore a long-term research project, with opportunities for
cooperation with perceptual psychologists and analytical art-historians.
Remko Scha holds an engineering degree from the Technological University of
Eindhoven. He did research in Artificial Intelligence at Philips Eindhoven and BBN
Laboratories in Cambridge, Mass. He is Professor of Computational Linguistics at
the University of Amsterdam with publications in logical semantics, statistical
language processing, visual Gestalt perception, and algorithmic art. – His artistic
work is carried out under the umbrella of the Institute of Artificial Art Amsterdam

and was presented in major museums and rock clubs in Europe and the USA. See
