The Painter’s Brush, 1947 to 2010: Hand-Held and Machine-Held

Datum: 17.11.2010

Ort: Cartesium Rotunde

Vortragende(r): Prof. Em. Roman Verostko Homepage - Vortragende(r) (Minneapolis College of Art & Design, U.S.A.)

Verostko outlines sources that dominated his artistic pursuit for over 60 years. He identifies form-generating ideas from early 20th century pioneers of non-objective art that influenced his pre-algorist work. He shows how those concepts shaped his approach to algorithms for creating his art. He illustrates the transition from „art-mind guiding hand” to „art-mind guiding machine”. He identifies the power of algorithmic form generators and the unique qualities of form they can yield. The session will include a brief addendum on his 2008 project, the Upsidedown Book and Mural for which he resurrected pre-algorist drawings and transformed them with digital tools.

Roman Verostko famous for his algorithmic pen and brush drawings, has studied graphics, painting, philosophy, theology and art history. He holds the MFA from Pratt Institute and is an MCAD Emeritus Professor of Humanities. He created electronically synchronized audio-visual programs in the 1960’s, studied Fortran in 1970, and exhibited his first fully algorist work in 1982. He holds prestigious awards, is represented in museums and private collections internationally, and is currently showing recent work, „Algorithmic Poetry”, at the DAM Gallery in Berlin.
