The talk reviews some old problems in
Elementary Number Theory which go back to FAREY,
GAUß, RIEMANN and MINKOWSKI. These involve the
FAREY- and the GAUß-map, the RIEMANN Hypothesis
and the slippery devil's staircase of MINKOWSKI.We
will discuss some important old answers as well as
some surprising new results. The talk should be
accessible to non-experts in this area.
