Activities

I am a musicologist with a focus on applied psychoacoustics in sound field synthesis, auditory displays and music information retrieval. My research interests also include musical acoustics, architectural acoustics, microphone- and hydrophone arrays.

Applied Psychoacoustics

1) Psychoacoustic Auditory Displays:

Implementation of auditory perception in the design of auditory displays and sonification for navigation, for application areas, like:
  • Minimally invasive surgery and other clinical procedures with limited visual landmarks

  • Auditory user interfaces

  • Sonification of movements in dance or rehabilitation

Videos from the auditory display can be found on YouTube.

2) Psychoacoustic Sound Field Synthesis:
  • Technical implementation of auditory perception

  • Physical implementation of the radiation characteristics of musical instruments

  • Investigation of the auditory perceived source extent

3) Microphone- and Hydrophone Array Technology:
Development of near and far field methods to:
  • Measure the sound radiation characteristics of musical instruments

  • Track objects

To find out more about my current work, you can visit the project websites of the Cognitive Systems Group, the Creative Unit IOI and the Bremen Spatial Cognition Center (BSCC), or follow the BSCC tweets.
My research projects and publications can be found on Academia, Google Scholar, LinkedIn, OrciD and Researchgate. Fundamentals of musical acoustics and psychoacoustics are demonstrated on my YouTube channel.
