What is the graduate seminar?

The graduate seminar is a place for you doctoral students of our group to discuss their own research. You are expected to submit a piece of your current research which contains penetrating questions or some loose ends on which others' opinion and thoughts may be valuable. You can expect to receive constructive feedback to help you move on. Additionally, you select two PostDocs of our group which have the duty of preparing an in-depth (oral) review.

Submissions are typically short scientific texts that address a specific part of your thesis work, for example statements on your research questions (which will eventually become the 1st chapter of your thesis), sections of an article you want to make bullet- or even reviewer-proof, a discussion of work related to your research, or you may even give a test presentation for an upcoming talk at a conference. Prepare for a 90 minute time slot and feel free to discuss opportunities with your advisor!

Submissions are supposed to be distributed one week in advance by mail to cosy-wi@...

Organization

Attendance is mandatory for all doctoral students on all dates. Also, having a contribution is mandatory. Please acknowledge that the dates of the seminar are communicated in advance and it is your duty to reserve the time slots, thus there are no excuses. Although attendance is not mandatory for PostDocs they are strongly encouraged to do so and invitations to serve as a reviewer are the kind of offers that cannot be refused.

On each date there are two slots a 90 minutes, so including time for a short break reserve the time slot 14:00 - 17:15. Roughly, each slots comprises about 10 minutes introduction by the presenting student, 10 minutes per reviewing PostDoc, and discussion.

Please remember, CoSy rocks!

For those not believing in the fairness of the slot distribution process, here's the computer program you may want to blame (use sbcl --script seminar-assignment.lisp to invoke).
