  • Study of Mathematics from 1969 to 1974 at TU Berlin with a scholarship of Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (diploma thesis on Automaten in pseudoabgeschlossenen Kategorien [Automata in pseudoclosed categories])
  • From 1974 to 1978 research assistant and from 1978 to 1982 assistant professor at the computer science department of the TU Berlin
  • 1978 doctoral degree (thesis on Manipulationen von Graphmanipulationen [manipulations of graph manipulations])
  • 1981 Habilitation for theoretical computer science
  • Since 1982 professor for computer science at the University of Bremen
  • From September 1985 to March 1986 Visiting Researcher at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York
  • From June 1986 to January 1989 and from June 1996 to June 1998 Head of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
  • From 1992 to 1997 Chairman of the IFIP Working Group 1.3 (Foundations of Systems Specification); IFIP Outstanding Service Award in 1996

Member of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS), Gesellschaft für Informatik [Society of Computer Science], Forum InformatikerInnen für Frieden und gesellschaftliche Verantwortung [forum of computer scientists for peace and social responsibility]

Research interests: theoretical computer science with emphasis on graph transformation, algebraic specification, and syntactic picture processing; computer and society.
